Apparently mosquitoes may not be afraid of DEET per se, but, rather, DEET just covers up the lactic acid, carbon dioxide, and 1-octen-3-ol that we emanate from our bodies. So DEET really isn’t a repellent, but, rather, blocks the mosquitoes from smelling your sweet scent. The article written by Ditzen et al. at the Rockefeller is reviewed on page 1471 of the 14 March 2008 Science magazine (Science scope section). The original article can be accessed here. -tmt
I met with one of the malaria researchers at JHSPH today, and we had a lengthy discussion about potential projects that involve clinical malaria, both with a field component and benchwork. It was fruitful but made me realize that now I have to do focused reading on the epidemiology of malaria in Zambia, where Hopkins has its malaria research center. I think I’m going to do it as a formal grant proposal with specific aims and such before presenting it the Dept of Medicine for time and funding (I need about a month for the field work and travel money).-tmt
